Our Story

Democracy is broken and there is a dire need to fix it. At the center, we don’t pretend to know how to fix it but we bet on four things:
Moonshot! – We need to tinker a lot to find the best solutions. We believe intuitively that the silver bullet to our dysfunctional democratic systems would be simple.
Collaboration! – We need an inspired, envisioned crowd to make this journey with. This crowd will develop new crafts, and form new communities of practice that will become “citizen institutions”
Technology! Aha! Without which there couldn’t be any hope. New tools, bring new realities, digital tech is the fire re-discovered.
Finally, Journalism is the fourth estate of the realm and the calvary! Without which citizens will never be able to demand for accountability and transparency. The lab enjoys the wealth of experience of our founder who built the biggest citizen journalism platform in Africa.

How we do what we do

There are two ways projects come into our pipeline.
Research: One is through our internal research process through which we find solutions to problems we have identified.
Eureka: Our members or partners come running at us with a brilliant idea they’ve got.
Hacks: We spend the weekend over-caffeinated, sleep deprived hitting hard at the problem till it yields.

IDEA

Always starts with a bright spark

2

PROTOTYPE

3

PRODUCTION

4

OWNERSHIP

MOUs and contracts are drawn

5

SCALE

Here's where we spread our wings!

6

Our Process

How do you save people caught in Stockholm syndrome? How do you break the apathy and cynicism of a people? These are hard questions that must be solved before we can enlist Africans in their own democracy. These are problems we must enlist the brightest Africans to solve.

The only way we know how to address these challenges is co-creation. The only job we do at the centre is define the problems and attract the brightest minds to solve them. We know many ideas will die, many projects will die, many products will fail, however, the ones that blossom will deepen democratic participation.
