MASTERCLASSES

Our mandate is to improve the practice of Journalism in Nigeria; as a result, since 2017, we have created masterclasses to help aspiring, early to mid-career journalists and even experienced professionals improve their skills, knowledge, and understanding of the field. These masterclasses often cover a wide range of topics related to journalism, from writing and reporting to multimedia storytelling and ethics. They are typically led by experienced journalists, editors, and other industry experts.

FELLOWSHIPS

Fellowships are competitive programs that offer individuals the opportunity to engage in a specific field of study, research, or professional development. From time to time, the Centre provides support for time-limited, immersive experiences to advance knowledge, skills, and careers in focus areas. Our Criminal Justice reporting fellowship for journalists has produced several award winning stories with impact within the sector. Our Post doctoral fellowship has been successful in advancing town and gown conversations in a bid to improve capacities in niche areas.

GRASSROOTS NEWS PROJECT (GNP)

With a half-decade of expertise in building grassroots movements combined with our broad network of citizen journalists and whistleblowers, we have designed the GNP to replicate successes on a national scale to the grassroots where we have not been able to permeate. This project has opened new vistas to birth new relationships with smaller local newsrooms to create an increased capacity for these newsrooms to keep the state and local leaders accountable. This joint reporting project with vibrant local newsrooms allowed capacity, skill sets and resources available to a bigger newsroom to percolate into smaller newsrooms in order to create a groundswell of media resistance to the authoritarian tendencies of subnational authorities. We have established a journalist network to provide mentorship, editorial support, and peer learning, as well as cross publishing. We are opening news deserts, providing agency for underserved and under-reported communities and demanding accountability at the subnational level.

DATA LAB

In a bid to create improved access to Public data, the data lab project is designed to dissect, analyse and understand in Nigeria. The project seeks to uncover patterns as well as sordid details, creating stories and indicators around . The Data Lab is an assembly of data enthusiasts to come together to hack public data; analyze, visualize and make sense of these data, while also campaigning for data liberalization.

CIVIC TECH

As AI is taking over the world, we are leading conversations around its adoption and acceptance for public good. We are at the forefront of creating several digital tools in several areas of national development including elections, national budget, security and media development. Our Civic tech hackathons bring together individuals with a passion for technology and a desire to solve real-world problems in their communities.

COMMUNITIES OF PRACTICE
